Nationalism vs Patriotism : Thin Line Difference Between The Two

Nationalism and Patriotism:

Nationalism and Patriotism is an old debate, and many countries free themselves from the clutches of slavery with the aid of Nationalism.

So what are my views about my homeland? Do I love my country without having hate for any other one? I criticize my country when I see something wrong? Do I proud my country for its broad range of different traditions, cultures, religions, etc.? Do I have a solid opinion about my country yet I allow the view of differences?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself if you want to know the difference between a Nationalist and a Patriot. If you answer all of the earlier questions with yes, You are a patriot. If no, I feel sorry for you.

Nationalism is a poison created by the political idea which dictates that the nation is the most significant political unit. It is a kind of obsession for the nation; whereas Patriotism is the love for the country without obsession. Patriotism regards to the nature of being patriotic. In nationalism, not only do people love their nation, but they truly put it before themselves & others. Being patriotic also purports to show significant support for the country. While patriotism is my inclination of feeling pride for my homeland, it is also feeling of satisfied with its ethnic, cultural, political and historical values.

Patriotism and Nationalism

Nationalism is almost similar. It also refers to feeling contentment for the country as well as its ethnic, cultural, political and historical values. Though, nationalism takes one level up; rather than just feeling proud of the nation, nationalists conduct to link their personality with their country. So nationalism becomes an extreme version of Patriotism.

In the matter of fact, Patriotism and Nationalism are pierced into a child since birth. Some people believe that they have to “overreact” to demonstrate their patriotism/nationalism to others. Also, there are times when there is a swell in patriotism and nationalism, which happen during times of war or similar conflict. However, what most people don’t discern is that there is a difference between Patriotism and Nationalism.

Point Wise Thin Line Difference:

  • Patriotism is the mild form of love for country, and its connotations are always positive. Whereas Nationalism is extremity and its implications are negative.
  • Patriotism involves personal opinion, and views and nationalism believe in “Identity” of the nation.
  • A Patriot will always try to build good relations with other countries while holding the national interest in balance. Whereas a nationalist always hates or look down up toward other nations.

nationalism vs patriotism

Why I prefer Patriotism:

  • The thin line Between patriot and a nationalist is that the patriot is proud of his nation for what it does or has achieved, & the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does. The first approach builds a feeling of obligation while the latter, of blind ego that leads to extremism.
  • Patriotism makes us love our country while the extorted form of current Nationalism believes in putting down others to show your love for the nation.

  • While Patriot carries the proud feeling in his country or its diverse culture, a nationalist often tends to glorify own culture or nation over all others, assuming that their own culture is greater or higher to others.
  • A Patriot will criticize its Country, Army, or government when he sees something wrong, even while he feel proud of it. But for a nationalist, the country or its government can do nothing immoral.
  • Nationalism is “abused” to consolidate people of a similar background by uniting them against another group of individuals. Nationalism is usually applied to shut down any criticism or discussion (Which is the spirit of Democracy) that might differ with anything the country or its government does. While a Patriot seeks discussion and debate on every criticism against his country so that he may find a way to make his country better.
  • Dissenting with any of nation’s policy or criticizing it is often end up with violence, mockery, insults of being anti-national or even physical abuse and deadly attacks. Any dissenter or the one with different views from the majority of the people is the anti national for nationalists. Therefore, over the past few years, nationalism has made a very bad rapport.

*******I also want to point out that Nationalism is not a pure negative. The theory of nationalism fundamentally affirms that every group who shares something in common, such as religion, race, culture, etc. should have a nation of their own.***********.
